New Delhi: US researchers have developed a new and highly effective generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool to rapidly detect exposure to the H5N1 virus — behind avian influenza or “bird flu”, and bolster national surveillance as the virus continues to spread in other animals. The study, published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, revealed that the AI tool quickly scans notes in electronic medical records and identifies high-risk patients who may have been infected with H5N1 bird flu. “This study shows how generative AI can fill a critical gap in our public health infrastructure by detecting high-risk patients that would otherwise go unnoticed,” said corresponding author Katherine E. Using a generative AI large language model, the research team analysed 13,494 visits in hospital emergency departments from adult patients in urban, suburban, and rural areas in 2024. These patients all had acute respiratory illness (such as cough, fever, congestion) or conjunctivitis — symptoms consistent with early H5N1 infections. The goal was to assess how well generative AI could find high-risk patients who may have been overlooked at the time of initial treatment. Scanning all of the emergency department notes, the model flagged 76 because they mentioned a high-risk exposure for bird flu, such as working as a butcher or at a farm with livestock, like chickens or cows. After a brief review by research staff, 14 patients were confirmed to have had recent, relevant exposure to animals known to carry H5N1, including poultry, wild birds, and livestock. These patients were not tested specifically for H5N1, so their potential bird-flu infections were not confirmed, but the model worked to find those “needle in a haystack” cases among thousands of patients treated for seasonal flu and other routine respiratory illnesses.

New Delhi: OpenAI on Monday announced the launch of the ‘OpenAI Learning Accelerator’, an India-first initiative aimed at empowering teachers and educators with artificial intelligence tools. The programme will accelerate research, expand access, and provide training on AI in education across the country. The initiative was unveiled as part of the pre-events leading up to India’s AI Action Summit 2026. OpenAI said India, home to the largest student population using ChatGPT globally, is uniquely positioned to lead in AI-enabled education. Millions of Indian students already use ChatGPT for homework help, exam preparation, and exploring new ideas. Through the Learning Accelerator, OpenAI will partner with leading institutions including IIT Madras and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). IIT Madras has signed a research collaboration with OpenAI, backed by $500,000 in funding, to study how AI can improve learning outcomes and innovative teaching methods. New Delhi: Nearly 70 to 80 per cent of India’s mobile data traffic is consumed indoors, yet significant coverage gaps remain in many premises, TRAI Chairperson Anil Kumar Lahoti said on Monday.With the adoption of advanced technologies like 5G, indoor connectivity requires careful planning of Digital Connectivity Infrastructure (DCI), including fibre entry, ducting, cable trays, rooftop access, Wi-Fi readiness, and resilience, as part of core infrastructure planning—similar to electricity and water supply—he said, addressing an online interactive session on the Framework for Rating of Properties on Digital Connectivity, jointly organised with The Forum of Indian Regulators (FoIR). TRAI Chairperson further informed participants that TRAI had notified the Regulations, 2024, introducing a voluntary star-rating system for properties and had released the Manual for Assessment of Digital Connectivity on August 13, 2025, to guide evaluations. He added that TRAI has already registered eight Digital Connectivity Rating Agencies (DCRAs) to operationalise this framework, with more applications under review. The session was attended by FoIR members along with senior representatives from the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI), Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), Competition Commission of India (CCI), State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs), and Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA).
