New Delhi: Smartphone exports surpassed Rs 1 lakh crore in just the first five months of FY 2025-26 — a 55 per cent jump over the same period last year, and over 330 million mobile phones a year are being manufactured in India and on average, there are about a billion mobile phones in use, an official statement said on Thursday.  In Q2 2025, India overtook China to become the top smartphone exporter to the United States. “The overall picture is also bright — for instance, India’s mobile phone manufacturing sector has generated over 12 lakh jobs over the past decade, uplifting families and strengthening India’s socio-economic fabric,” according to the official statement. India’s smartphone market is evolving rapidly, with consumer preferences increasingly leaning toward 5G adoption and premium features. According to market research, 5G smartphone shipments surged to 82 per cent of total shipments last year, reflecting a remarkable 49 per cent YoY growth.  Add Zee News as a Preferred Source Mid-range devices priced between Rs 10,000–Rs 13,000 continue to see strong demand, expanding the base for high-performance yet affordable smartphones. Total production of electronics has increased from Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 11.3 lakh crore in 2024-25. Mobiles have been the crowning accomplishment of the electronics manufacturing sector boom. Production of mobile phones has soared from Rs 18,000 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 5.45 lakh crore in 2024-25, a 28-fold rise. India is the second-largest mobile phone manufacturer globally, with over 300 manufacturing facilities. Tamil Nadu has over 47 manufacturing units of electronics, supported under various schemes of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), as per the official statement.

Bengaluru: India has emerged as the leader in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption across the Asia Pacific region, with more than half of metro adults actively using generative AI this year, a new report said on Tuesday. The data compiled by Forrester highlights that 56 per cent of Indians living in cities are using generative AI tools in 2025, up from 44 per cent in 2024, making India the frontrunner in the region. The report shows that Indian consumers are not only quick to adopt AI but also have the highest levels of AI knowledge globally. Around 63 per cent of Indian adults say they understand AI well, compared to just 18 per cent in Australia and 26 per cent in Singapore. Only 5 per cent of Indians said they did not understand AI, the lowest percentage worldwide. Among different age groups, millennials stand out as the most knowledgeable, with nearly 69 per cent showing strong AI understanding. However, the research also reveals a trust paradox. While 45 per cent of Indians see AI as a serious threat to society, 66 per cent of those who are knowledgeable about AI also trust the information it provides. For example, 64 per cent of Indian consumers trust AI-powered language translation services, much higher than in Australia (27 per cent) or Singapore (38 per cent). When it comes to managing AI risks, Indians place the most confidence in long-established companies and big tech firms, with 58 per cent trusting these players. Highly regulated institutions such as banks also enjoy significant trust. This trust level is much higher than in Australia and Singapore, where private companies typically inspire less confidence. “India’s AI landscape presents a remarkable combination of high adoption, sophisticated understanding, and pragmatic scepticism,” said Vasupradha Srinivasan, principal analyst at Forrester.“Indian consumers are discerning users who understand both AI’s potential and its risks. This creates an environment where transparency, security, and credibility become competitive strengths for enterprises,” Srinivasan added.

New Delhi: India’s smartphone exports have crossed Rs 1 lakh crore in value in the first five months of FY26, setting a new record, according to industry estimates. Even amid tariff and trade disputes with the US, India’s smartphone export figure represented a 55 per cent increase — from Rs 64,500 crore during the same period last fiscal (FY25). Tech giant Apple’s contract manufacturers, Tata Electronics and Foxconn, made up nearly 75 per cent of outbound shipments, contributing over Rs 75,000 crore worth of exports, as per industry sources. The production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme incentivised the US tech giant to move its manufacturing capabilities into India. The total volume of “Made-in-India” smartphones grew over 240 per cent YoY. Alongside China and Vietnam, India is now a major player in global electronics manufacturing, with companies shifting production to diversify supply chains. Samsung and Motorola Increase US Targeted Supply Samsung and Motorola have also increased their share of US-targeted supply from India, although their shifts are significantly slower and smaller in scale than Apple’s. Motorola, similar to Apple, has its core manufacturing hub in China, whereas Samsung relies mainly on producing its smartphones in Vietnam. India now has 300 mobile manufacturing units, up from two in 2014. In FY14, 26 per cent of mobile phones sold in India were locally made, which has surged to 99.2 per cent being manufactured domestically, according to government data.

New Delhi: US tech giant Apple’s iPhone shipments in India are projected to grow by up to 25 per cent to reach a record 14-15 million units in 2025, according to industry estimates. The surge in shipments is driven by heavy discounts on older models and strategic pricing of the newly launched iPhone 17 series. Research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) India expects dispatches to reach 15 million units in 2025, up from 12 million in 2024, while Canalys projects 14.20 million and Counterpoint Research estimates 18-19 per cent growth, targeting 8 per cent market share in the Indian smartphone market. Industry experts noted that India, Apple’s fastest-growing global market, is expected to remain central to its sales trajectory over the next two years, with festive demand playing a key role. The rising attach rates of ecosystem products will also boost revenue growth, the firm said. Analysts noted that the iPhone 16 was India’s highest-selling model in H1 2025, driving 96.50 per cent growth in the premium smartphone segment. With EMI schemes and expanding flagship retail stores in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Pune, Apple is expected to broaden its consumer base and strengthen its ecosystem presence in India. Apple has recently opened two new stores in Bengaluru and Pune as part of its retail expansion in India, anticipating it to be the next key market. In Apple’s largest overseas market, China, sales grew by only 4.4 per cent in the June quarter following two years of declines. India is also becoming central to Apple’s manufacturing plans, with one in every five iPhones now being produced in the country.
