Varun Mohan Windsurf CEO: Tech giant Google has roped in Indian-origin Varun Mohan, co-founder and CEO of coding AI startup Windsurf, in a major move in the ongoing AI talent race. Windsurf will continue to operate as an independent business and maintain the right to license its technology elsewhere, even in light of the well-publicised talent change.    In a post on social media platform X, Demis Hassabis, Co-Founder and CEO at Google DeepMind, informed hiring several senior Research and Development team members, along with Mohan. From a young age, Mohan showed a natural talent for problem-solving. At the Harker School in San Jose, he stood out in math and computing Olympiads, laying the foundation for what was to come. That passion led him to MIT, where he earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees, diving deep into operating systems, distributed computing, and machine learning. Mohan’s journey through the tech world took him to some of the industry’s biggest names which includes Nuro, Quora, LinkedIn, Databricks, and Samsung where he honed his skills and broadened his perspective. Then in 2021, he teamed up with Chen to launch Codeium, a company that would later evolve into Windsurf.  Google Deal With Windsurf Google has announced a $2.4 billion licensing and compensation deal with Windsurf. This agreement gives Google a non-exclusive license to key parts of Windsurf’s technology, but it’s not an acquisition or equity investment. Windsurf, a rising player in the AI coding space, is known for its innovative “vibe coding” — an easy-to-use, AI-powered approach to software development that’s gaining traction among developers. In what’s being called a “reverse-acquihire,” Google isn’t buying the company or taking a stake. Instead, it’s paying big money to license the tech and bring top talent from Windsurf on board. Indian-Origin CEO Rejected $3 Billion OpenAI Deal  Although OpenAI had reportedly been in exclusive acquisition talks with Windsurf earlier this year for about $3 billion, the move is seen as a setback for OpenAI and a strategic win for Google. According to an OpenAI representative, that exclusivity period is now over. The already fierce rivalry between AI titans is heightened by this development. Microsoft is developing its own AI-driven coding tools through “agent mode” in Visual Studio Code, and Meta recently hired Alexandr Wang, the founder of Scale AI, to lead its AI strategy as part of a $14.3 billion initiative. In April, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that 30 per cent of the company’s code is now written by AI. Google Tap Windsurf To Boost Gemini’s AI Coding  Google is intensifying its efforts to use AI to revolutionize software development with the Windsurf acquisition. It has already attracted top talent from the generative AI chatbot service Character. AI and is now looking to enhance its Gemini platform with features that could transform the way coding is done. Jeff Wang, interim CEO of Windsurf, stated on X that the company will continue developing its enterprise product, while its core team joins Google to lead the next wave of innovation in AI-assisted development. Bengaluru: Google on Thursday launched a new agricultural monitoring and event detection (AMED) application programming interface (API) in India. The company also announced a collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur to build localised datasets on India’s rich cultural tapestry. It will help in equipping global Large Language Models with better linguistic and cultural context at the local level. The new mechanism will provide information on crops and field activity across India that will eventually empower the ecosystem to build targeted solutions that support agricultural productivity and resilience, the global tech giant said in a statement. The API details the type of crop on individual fields across India, as well as each field’s size and corresponding sowing and harvesting dates. It will also provide historical information of last three years about the agricultural activity in each field. “With AI research — and especially with AMED building on the foundation of ALU — we’re working on accelerating crucial shifts, transforming broad insights to granular, real-time data, so that increasingly impactful solutions not only translate into benefit for India’s farmers, but also bolster the nation against rising climate risks,” said Alok Talekar, agriculture and sustainability research lead, Google DeepMind. “At Google, along with charting new frontiers in foundational AI, which forms the backbone of many of our launches in the Gemini era, we have continued advancing fundamental research that addresses some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity,” said Manish Gupta, Senior Director for India and APAC at Google DeepMind. By adding more localised data — such as various languages, dialects, and cultural quirks that aren’t currently included in AI training — Google’s Amplify Initiative seeks to fill in knowledge gaps in Large Language models. “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Google on the Amplify Initiative and open a new chapter in global AI development,” stated Dr Mainack Mandal, Assistant Professor, IIT Kharagpur.

New Delhi: In what could change the future of affordable satellite-based internet service in India, Elon Musk’s Starlink on Wednesday received approval from the country’s space regulator, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe).  With this, the final regulatory hurdle for the cheaper internet service to start rolling its commercial satellite broadband operations in the country has been cleared, according to the IN-SPACe final authorisation document for Starlink seen by IANS. Starlink now needs to acquire spectrum from the government and establish ground infrastructure for its services. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is set to grant trial spectrum to the US-based space firm to complete security compliance demonstrations. Starlink has signed its first commercial agreements with VSAT providers in India. VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) service providers offer satellite-based internet and communication solutions, particularly for locations with limited or no terrestrial connectivity. The affordable satellite-based internet service Starlink is now set to roll out in the country in a few months. While the groundwork is nearly complete, some technical and procedural steps remain before the service can be launched in a few months. Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said last week that all due diligence has been completed from their end for the entry of SpaceX’s Starlink service in India, and once they receive the necessary regulatory and licensing approvals from the space regulator, they can roll out the service in the country whenever they wish to. The space regulator had earlier issued a draft letter of intent (LOI) to the company. Starlink provides internet through a network of satellites orbiting Earth. The company currently operates the world’s largest constellation of satellites, with more than 6,750 in orbit. Starlink services are already available in several countries, including Mongolia, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Jordan, Yemen, Azerbaijan and Sri Lanka. Amazon’s Project Kuiper, Starlink’s rival, is also awaiting regulatory approvals from both the DoT and IN-SPACe. Kuiper is planning a large-scale satcom rollout in India.
