New Delhi: Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, is finally gearing up to launch in India. After securing its license last week, the company is expected to begin services within the next two months, sources reported to ET. Starlink has already set its pricing—users will need to pay around Rs 33,000 for the satellite dish while the monthly unlimited data plan is likely to cost Rs 3,000. As part of its launch plan, Starlink will offer a free one-month trial with every device purchase. This will let users try out the service before deciding to pay the monthly fee. Starlink is set to make a big difference in improving internet access across India’s remote and underserved regions. In areas where traditional broadband has been hard to set up, Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellites aim to bring fast, reliable internet—even to places that were previously out of reach. Starlink’s pricing in India seems to follow its regional strategy with device costs matching those in nearby countries. For example, the satellite dish is priced at Rs 33,000 in both Bangladesh and Bhutan—just like in India. Experts believe Starlink’s entry into India could shake up the telecom market and boost competition. New Delhi: OpenAI’s popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT on Tuesday experienced a significant global outage. Users from around the world reported issues with the service with outage tracking website Down Detector showing a surge in complaints. By 3 PM, over 600 reports had been filed in India, while the United Kingdom and the United States saw over 1,000 and nearly 500 user complaints, respectively, indicating a widespread disruption. The service disruption reportedly began around 12:30 pm IST with the number of outage reports escalating sharply over the next three hours. Users attempting to interact with the AI were met with an error message that read, “A network error occurred. Please check your connection and try again. If this issue persists please contact us through our help center at help.openai.com.” In early April, a surge in popularity overwhelmed the system, causing an outage. Fans went wild for the Ghibli image generation feature, which took the internet by storm. This massive spike in users led to a crash on April 2.

Cupertino: Unlocking new ways for users, Apple on Monday announced new Apple Intelligence features across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro.  Developers can now access the Apple Intelligence on-device foundation model to power private, intelligent experiences within their apps, the company said during its ‘WWDC25’ event here. In Messages, Live Translation can automatically translate messages. And when on a phone call, the translation is spoken aloud throughout the conversation. With Live Translation, users can communicate across languages whether they’re typing in Messages, or speaking during FaceTime or Phone conversations. Additionally, Shortcuts can now tap into Apple Intelligence directly, and developers will be able to access the on-device large language model at the core of Apple Intelligence, giving them direct access to intelligence that is powerful, fast, built with privacy, and available even when users are offline. These Apple Intelligence features are available for testing starting today, and will be available to users with supported devices set to a supported language this fall. “The models that power Apple Intelligence are becoming more capable and efficient, and we’re integrating features in even more places across each of our operating systems,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “We’re also taking the huge step of giving developers direct access to the on-device foundation model powering Apple Intelligence, allowing them to tap into intelligence that is powerful, fast, built with privacy, and available even when users are offline. Apple Intelligence features will be coming to eight more languages by the end of the year: Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese (Portugal), Swedish, Turkish, Chinese (traditional), and Vietnamese. Genmoji and Image Playground provide users with even more ways to express themselves. In addition to turning a text description into a Genmoji, users can now mix together emoji and combine them with descriptions to create something new. When users make images inspired by family and friends using Genmoji and Image Playground, they have the ability to change expressions or adjust personal attributes, like hairstyle, to match their friend’s latest look, said Apple. In Image Playground, users can tap into brand-new styles with ChatGPT, like an oil painting style or vector art. For moments when users have a specific idea in mind, they can tap Any Style and describe what they want. Image Playground sends a user’s description or photo to ChatGPT and creates a unique image. Users are always in control, and nothing is shared with ChatGPT without their permission. New Delhi: The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert-In) has issued a high-risk warning concerning several vulnerabilities found in Google Chrome. Cert-In has accessed high risk Multiple Vulnerabilities in Google Chrome for Desktop. “Multiple Vulnerabilities have been reported in Google Chrome which could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code and cause of denial of service (DoS) on the targeted system. Software Affected Google Chrome versions prior to 137.0.7151.55 for Linux Google Chrome versions prior to 137.0.7151.55/56 for Window and Mac Target Audience All end-user organizations and individuals using Google Chrome for Desktop. Cert-In said, these vulnerabilities exists in Google Chrome due to Use after free in Compositing & libvpx; Inappropriate implementation in Background Fetch API, FileSystemAccess API, Messages, BFCache & Tab Strip; and Out of bounds write in V8. A remote attacker could potentially exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading a victim to visit a specially  crafted web page. Successful exploitation of these vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code and cause of denial of service (DoS) on the targeted system. The nodal agency has advised that users should use appropriate updates as mentioned by the vendor.

New Delhi: Market intelligence research firm Counterpoint Research has lowered its global smartphone shipment forecast for 2025. The firm has revised its 2025 global smartphone shipment growth forecast downward to 1.9% year-on-year, from the earlier projection of 4.2%, citing uncertainties surrounding US tariffs. However, most regions are still expected to see growth, except North America and China, according to Counterpoint Research’s latest Market Outlook: Smartphone Shipment Forecast Report. Price increases from cost pass-throughs remain a key focal point, although the tariff situation is fluid and unpredictable. Commenting on the revised forecast, Associate Director Liz Lee said, “All eyes are on Apple and Samsung because of their exposure to the US market. Although tariffs have played a role in our forecast revisions, we are also factoring in weakened demand not just in North America but also across Europe and parts of Asia.” Lee added, “We still expect positive shipment growth for Apple in 2025, driven by the strong performance of the iPhone 16 series in Q1 2025.” She also noted that premiumisation trends remain supportive across emerging markets like India, Southeast Asia, and the Gulf countries—these are long-term tailwinds for iPhones. Counterpoint Research’s current forecasts assume a relatively stable tariff environment through 2025. However, the escalating rhetoric and uncertainty around trade policy could significantly impact manufacturers’ pricing strategies, supply chain planning, and ultimately, consumer demand. Commenting on projections for global smartphone shipment growth in 2025, Associate Director Ethan Qi said, “The bright spot this year—again—will likely be Huawei. We are seeing an easing in sourcing bottlenecks for key components, at least through the rest of the year, which should help Huawei gain substantial share in the mid-to-lower-end segments at home.”
